Premier rapport de mission de Raphaële et de Arthur.

          "Aujourd'hui, c'est samedi. Et comme chaque samedi, nous partons pour une journée "découverte de la région" organisée par Leon Henson, père de la paroisse Cristu Nagar, à Nagercoil (Tamil Nadu) et fondateur de l’association Grace, partenaire de Education World 86.  Après Kanyakumari, la ville côtière la plus au sud de l'Inde où 3 océans se rencontrent, et une excursion dans la campagne alentour, nous accompagnons ce matin plusieurs classes de l'école Saint Aloysius (rattachée à la paroisse) dans leur sortie scolaire de fin d'année. Aussitôt levés, nous embarquons à bord d'un bus où s'entassent une centaine d'enfants et une dizaine d'enseignantes.  Nous passerons toute la journée dans le Kerala, l'état voisin du Tamil Nadu.  Nous visiterons un barrage et son parc, verrons la mer et découvrirons le musée des sciences.  De cette belle et chaude journée en Inde, nous retiendrons la bonne humeur des élèves et des professeurs, leur sympathie à notre égard, leur curiosité et leur grande gentillesse."

"En tant que membres d' Education World 86, nous avons voulu apporter notre aide à l'un de nos programmes dans le sud de l'Inde où nous nous sommes rendus pour y passer quelques semaines. Léon Henson nous a accueillis et nous a préparé dès notre arrivée un programme sur mesure pour toute la durée de notre séjour :






● En semaine, cours d'anglais le matin et découverte des programmes de solidarité mis en place par Leon Henson, l'après-midi.






● Les weekends consacrés en partie à des balades dans la région.

          Du lundi au vendredi matin donc, nous enseignons à 2 classes d'enfants qui suivent une partie de leur scolarité en anglais.  Chaque jour, nous choisissons un sujet : voyages, gastronomie, santé, environnement... et nous imaginons quelques exercices simples au tableau noir pour les inciter à s’exprimer en anglais, à construire des phrases, à conjuguer correctement, etc. Nous avons également eu l’occasion d’utiliser le “language lab”, la salle informatique financée par Education World pour leur montrer quelques images et vidéos en anglais, de Paris et de la France. Nous apprécions particulièrement le contact avec ces enfants, ils se sont rapidement habitués à notre accent (et nous au leur !) et semblent contents de nous voir arriver le matin.

          L’après-midi, nous sommes invités à rencontrer les responsables et bénéficiaires d’un programme de soutien  pour les plus pauvres mis en place par Leon Henson dans le cadre de Grace.  Quelques années après son arrivée à Nagercoil, Henson a créé le "Charity Center", une sous-structure autonome rattachée à Grace, qui encadre et développe 5 projets :●     la formation à la couture pour des femmes qui bénéficient ainsi d'un emploi,
●     la formation au jardinage pour des enfants dont les parents peuvent revendre ou consommer la récolte,
●     le développement d'une banque proposant des prêts et micro-crédits,
●     La préparation de citrons confits (lime pickle), et
●     le lancement d'une épicerie sociale.

          Avec l'argent récolté par la vente des produits issus de la confection de vêtements ou les intérêts des prêts, le  "Charity Center" finance par exemple les frais de scolarité de certains enfants, soutient les projets de l'école, complète les salaires des professeurs, etc.

          Nous reviendrons bien sûr plus en détails sur ces différents projets, leur état d'avancement et leur évolution !

       Cela fera bientôt 3 semaines que nous avons rejoint Nagercoil. L’expérience est inédite et enrichissante ! Ce séjour nous a permis d’appréhender de nombreux aspects de la société indienne, ses codes et ses traditions et d'apporter une aide à ce programme de l'association.  Nous bénéficions chaque jour du sens de l’hospitalité non seulement de Leon Henson mais également de toute sa communauté. Nous sommes très bien accueillis et nous souviendrons longtemps de notre passage ici ! En attendant nous profitons pour quelques jours encore de notre séjour à Nagercoil."

Raphaèle's and Arthur's first report

          "Today is Saturday. And like every Saturday, we go to visit the region around Nagercoil (Tamil Nadu).  This trip is organized by father Henson, priest at the Cristu Nagar Parish. He is also the founder of the Grace organization, which is one of the partners of Education World 86 in South India. As members of Education World 86, we have been staying with him for about 3 weeks now.

          After Kanyakumari, which is the most southern coastal town of peninsular India and the meeting point of three oceans (the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian sea and the Indian Ocean), and a trek in the surrounding countryside, we participate this morning in a class trip of the Saint Aloysius School (which is supported by the parish). Early in the morning, we get into a bus with almost one hundred students and ten teachers.  We spend one day in Kerala, which is the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu. We visit a dam, we play on the beach and we discover a science museum. We will never forget the joy and the laughs of the students during this day.

          When we first arrived at Nagercoil, Leon Henson had already prepared a well-planned and thought-through timetable for all the duration of our stay:

·During the week, we would teach English classes in the morning and attend presentations of several solidarity projects in the afternoon.

·         During the weekends, we would do some sightseeing on Saturdays.

        From Monday to Friday morning, we thus teach English to two different classes of the school. Every day, we try to pick one specific topic of interest, such as travelling, food, health, environment… and we prepare some simple exercises on the blackboard in order to encourage the students to express themselves in spoken English, to build simple sentences or to properly conjugate verbs.

          We also have the opportunity to use the computer room, which was created a few years ago through the support of Education World 86. We are able to show them pictures and videos of Paris and London and to share with them some aspects of our western lifestyle that are unknown to them. We particularly appreciate the spontaneity and the curiosity of the students. They rapidly got used to our English accent (so did we to theirs…) and they seem happy to see us coming every morning for class.

           In the afternoon, we are invited to meet the persons in charge, as well as the beneficiaries, of the several solidarity projects established by Leon Henson as part of the Grace organization. A few years after arriving at Nagercoil, Henson created the "Charity Center", a framework organization attached to Grace, which currently supervises and develops 5 projects:

    - Tailoring courses for poor women who are willing to increase their household incomes,

·        
  -   - Gardening courses for children so that their parents can cook or sell the harvested fruits and vegetables,

·         
-  - A bank - created with the support of EW - which can offer grants and micro-loans,

·       
   -       -  The preparation and sale of lime pickles, and

-·   A  Non-profit  grocery store for the poorest.

          With the money collected for instance from the sales of the tailored made garments or from the loan interest, the charity center can fund tuition fees for needed students, help the school projects or participate in the payment of the teacher wages.

        Of course, we will come back to these projects to provide more details on their progress and development!

       We have now been staying in Nagercoil for three weeks. It has been a very rewarding and original experience! This stay allows us to better comprehend many aspects of the Indian way of life and customs (such as the cast system, the arranged marriage and dowries) and to ponder the pros and cons of our western society by comparison. Every day, we enjoy all the hospitality from Leon Henson and the whole community.  We will always remember such a warm welcome here!  In the meantime, we should enjoy our last few days in Nagercoil before having to fly back to France and return to our Parisian busy life."
