Le Comte de Blossac a cédé des terres à la ville de Poitiers il y a des centaines d'années... C'est maintenant un fort joli parc, le long des remparts médiévaux, avec une vue imprenable sur la vallée du Clain. Tous les deux ans, la ville de Poitiers organise une très grande manifestation - pour mettre en valeur le patrimoine associatif de la ville. C'est l'occasion pour quelque 450 associations municipales de rencontrer un très grand public - plus de 20,000 visiteurs pendant la journée. Le 23 septembre, EW était encore présente - pour la 5è fois...

Il s'agit d'une opération d'envergure... L'on doit monter le stand la veille, et revenir dès 7h30 du matin pour "fignoler" l'installation. Ce n'est pas une démarche "commerciale" à proprement parler - mais la ville tolère la vente d'objets dans un but strictement non-lucratif. EW alors a passé une journée de 12h - pour vendre un peu d'artisanat, certes - mais surtout pour présenter ses actions, pour tisser du lien social, et pour rencontrer nos concitoyens et répondre à leurs multiples questions.

Les 450 stands sont regroupés par "Villages" - Humanitaire et Droits de l'Homme, mais aussi Culture, Santé, Sports, etc... - avec un service de restauration assuré par des groupes d'insertion. Une grande fête de la ville où chacun a sa place, et où l'on peut tout partager...

Ce fut une belle journée pour EW. Merci à tous ceux qui ont aidé à tenir le stand et à ceux qui sont venus nous rendre visite. Seul bémol - lors de la "remballe", les cieux - cléments jusqu'alors - se sont déchaînés et l'on s'est retrouvé sous une pluie battante pour ramener tout à la maison ! Rendez-vous maintenant à Blossac en 2014...

Several centuries ago, Count Blossac deeded part of his lands to the City of Poitiers (France). Today, this area has been turned into a beautiful city park, along the old medieval ramparts, overlooking the Clain Valley. Every 2 years, the city now uses the park as the site of its Bi-Annual "Association Day". In all, there are some 450 different municipal associations which come together - to welcome over 20,000 visitors. The 23rd of September, 2012 - EW was present - for the fifth time since its creation in 2003...

It is a grand affair. Associations come the day before to begin setting up, and then are on site as of 7:30 a.m. on the Sunday morning. This gives a bit of time to finish organizing each stand before visitors actually start pouring in. It is a 12-hour day. Although nothing is designed to be a "commercial" operation, the city does allow some sales, as long as they are totally non-lucrative. So EW sold a few handicrafts, although the real objective was to get the message out : share with fellow citizens, explain what it is that we do, and how we do it, meet a bunch of really nice folks and share experiences... We met some potential new members, and individuals who expressed an interest in volunteering abroad...

The 450 participating associations are divided into different "Villages" - Humanitarian and Human Rights, of course, but also Culture, Health Services, Sports, etc. It is also possible to enjoy a meal or the beer garden. The people responsible for food preparation are marginalized local populations participating in different "insertion" projects, as a stepping stone to social reintegration. So this is truly a City-Wide Festival, highlighting what each one does best, with room for everyone and their many talents...
It was a great day for EW. Thanks to all those who helped man the stand and also to all those who came by to share with us. Only down side was at just 7 p.m. as we were packing things up - the skies let loose and we all got drenched ! Next Solidarity Festival = September, 2014 ! Best regards - EW
