Fête de la solidarité / Annual Solidarity Festival - 25/06/2017

12ème EDITION DE LA FETE DE LA SOLIDARITE

12th EDITION OF OUR ANNUAL SOLIDARITY FESTIVAL

ANGLOPHONES PLEASE SCROLL DOWN

ENGLISH-LANGUAGE VERSION

On Sunday June 25th we celebrated our annual solidarity party. This important meeting always provides the opportunity for our members to get back in touch, party and share information on our various programs, etc...

Change of venue this year: we are at Hélène Shemwell's home, our new secretary, her garden providing a number of niches where small groups congregate and change... and inside the house where the Argentinian Tango dancers will perform.

But the spirit remains the same: simplicity, friendliness, good spirits and solidarity as reminded by the President and the new Secretary. A reminder also of our NGO's history founded in 2003 by three people and with a budget of a few euros.  There are now about 60 members spread out all over France, Europe, the US and Canada...All volunteers with the twin goal of  making people aware of the North - South issues and  supporting local populations on three continents ( Africa, Latin America and Asia).  Our main ongoing actions: to rehabilitate water retention basins in Tamil Nadu (Southern India) where they have been experiencing drought for months and launching a new spronsorship program for gypsies and untouchable children.  We also decided to support here in Poitiers migrants from the DNSI group ( D'ailleurs Nous Sommes d'Ici).

Following the welcome adress of the Pesident and the new Secretary, our harmonica player, Jean-Louis, performed the moving " Amazing Grace " in memory of Melinda Tims, co-founder of EW and Secretary from 2003 to 2015,  who was taken from us almost two years ago.

The party continued with demonstrations and workshops of talents of all kinds and all ages. Micheline, 80 years old, who took to the violin again after a 45 year lapse, agreed to perform an extract from Nabuko for us... She insisted on warning us there might be a few off keys but that it would be better next year!

(see vidéo Micheline on the French version)

It is interesting to mention that Micheline's professor offers free music classes to migrants'  chidren and supplies the instruments they need...

Jean-Louis took up his harmonica once again for the very popular waltz " Saint Jean".

Geneviève and Philippe, supported by Luis, performed twice  wonderful argentinian tango demonstrations.

Music, dance and also magic with Professor Leo.

(see photo on the French version)

Towards the end of the evening Luis, Bernard,  and Francine joined forces to interpret French folk songs.

As is custom - and to raise money- there was a sale of cakes and refeshment,  of handycrafts from India, Vietnam, Peru... as well as EW products - t-shirts for small kids amongst others, and  our beautifull new 2018 calendar already here! (sale price 10 €).

The raffle and apéritif ended this pleasant sunny afternoon.

We would like to thank all present and all the volunteers who provided entertainment for our solidarity party, who set-up and took down the exhibits as well as manned them, the bakers and young raffle ticket vendors and various cameramen and women... All proceeds from the party will help support our programs.

Have a very nice summer ! Our next meeting will take place on Sept. 12th.
