DERNIERES NOUVELLES DU TAMIL NADU / LATEST NEWS FROM TAMIL NADU

ANGLOPHONES, PLEASE SCROLL DOWN.

                            EW.

ENGLISH - LANGUAGE VERSION

The heat and the drought have been hitting our country lately but we were, in most cases, able to face the situation.

Unfortunately, this is not the case in other parts of the planet where
poverty - stricken populations are suffering from hunger and epidemics.

Water has been lacking for months in Tamil Nadu.  Our friends from SCAD (our partner association in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu) had already informed us at the end of 2016 about the absence of a monsoon which is usually due around October.  The situation has not yet improved and poor people have practically no access to water.

According to the "Courrier International" dated March 31st, Tamil agricultural workers have been organizing protests to ask for the help of the government.  One of them asked one of the reporters to take his picture, a rat in his mouth... Without any resources, the workers went up to New Delhi to attract Modi's attention on the increasing number of suicides.

SCAD is helping of course as much as they can.

Our  "Ooranie 2" project - rehabilitation of huge water-retaining basins - is still in progress and the fish-farming aspect had to be postponed due to an insufficient water level.

As a reminder, here is a picture of one ooranie before deepening in view of rehabilitation :

Unfortunately,  the land  in South Tamil Nadu is as strikingly dry today, as testified by this recent picture :

A few days ago, Cletus Babu, Head of SCAD, shared a little hope with us : the temperatures are not as high, which might be a sign of coming rain...

EW has supported water projects in the area for many years : RWH (Rain Water Harvesting Systems) and Ooranies rehabilitation...But like the rest of our planet,  Tamil Nadu is suffering from climate changes.

A more optimistic note : our sponsoring program for untouchable and gypsy kids is on the right track...

A new article on our annual Festival coming up soon ..

                      Be well, EW.
