Le projet-pilote, lancé au début de l'année (voir notre article du 25 février 2015) en faveur de 7 jeunes handicapés du Foyer Anini a connu, selon la responsable Paty Diaz, un réel succès.
Le Foyer Anini a été créé à Guatemala City en 1985 par une douzaine de volontaires. C'est une association à but non lucratif, sans aucune affiliation politique. Il accueille actuellement environ 70 personnes, principalement des orphelins, des enfants ou adultes abandonnés dont les âges s'échelonnent entre 1 an et demi et 54 ans. Les handicaps sont très divers : microcéphalie, hydrocéphalie, trisomie, retard psychomoteur, retard du langage, etc...

L'objectif du foyer est de procurer à tous, les conditions d'une vie décente, de développer leur potentiel, leur estime de soi et de promouvoir leur intégration sociale. Ceci dans une atmosphère familiale et aimante.
Le Foyer est organisé autour de 4 maisons selon l'âge et les problèmes particuliers de chacun.

La maison 4 héberge des adultes dont l'âge va jusqu'à 54 ans. 7 d'entre eux ont été choisis pour le projet-pilote. Ils ont de 17 à 40 ans mais leur âge mental est de 8 à 10 ans. Le but du projet est l'intégration sociale, l'apprentissage d'un travail salarié, l'initiation à la gestion d'un pécule personnel.
Les occupations principales ont été la lessive, le nettoyage et l'entretien du matériel et des locaux, l'aide à la cuisine, le soin des plus petits. Comme le Foyer assure un encadrement scolaire adapté, ces activités se déroulent principalement le samedi et le dimanche et tous les matins pendant les vacances.
Les participants se sont montrés responsables. Ils ont appris à signer leur nom, à s'occuper des plus jeunes, à s'entraider et à utiliser leur argent personnel à bon escient.
Sofia, la plus âgée des participantes, s'est investie dans un programme d'épargne au sein du Foyer : le "Cuchubal".

Le "Cuchubal", qui existe dans certains pays d'Amérique Centrale, est un mécanisme financier collectif. Chaque membre apporte sa contribution mensuelle à un fonds d'épargne qui permet l'octroi de prêts. Les groupes - de 12 personnes maximum - se réunissent régulièrement, organisent de petites fêtes et servent, ainsi, à renforcer la cohésion sociale.

Selon les propres mots de Paty Diaz : "Le succès de l'expérience peut sembler petit aux yeux de certains, mais, pour nous qui vivons avec ces jeunes et adultes, il est très grand. Chaque jour est une aube nouvelle pleine d'espérance, de sourires et d'affection...Même si, comme dans chaque famille, il y a des problèmes que nous nous efforçons de résoudre. Nous exprimons ici notre gratitude envers EW."

FOLLOW UP PILOT PROGRAM - GUATEMALA
The EW pilot-project in favor of the handicapped from the Anini Center in Guatemala City has been very successful, according to Paty Diaz, our relay-person on site and the head of the project. (See our blog article dated Feb. 25th, 2015.)
The Anini Center was founded in 1985 in Guatemala City by a group of about a dozen volunteers. It is a humanitarian, non-profit organization with no political affiliations. At the present time about 70 residents live there and are well and lovingly taken care of. Their ages range from 18 months to 54. They are mostly orphans and abandoned children and adults. They suffer from various handicaps : microcephalus, hydrocephalus, Down syndrom, language and mobility problems, etc...

The objectives of the Center are to give to all the conditions of a decent life, to help develop their capacities, to build and reinforce their self-esteem and to work towards social integration. All this in a loving and family-like atmosphere.
Four houses make up the Center. Each one is adapted to age and/or specific problems

House n° 4 welcomes adults between 18 and 54 years of age. 7 of them have been chosen for the pilot-project : 5 men and 2 women. Though they are between 18 and 40, their mental ages generally range between 8 and 10. The project aims at making them responsible for a specific job for which they get a salary, and enabling them to use personal gains in a wise manner. It is also a way to facilitate social integration.
Their principal activities are : helping with the laundry, cleaning and maintaining the premises, working in the kitchen, taking care of the younger ones, etc... These activities take place mostly on week-ends - as the Center provides adapted schooling and education - and in the mornings during school holidays.
The participants have learned to sign their names, to be responsible, to take care of the young ones, to help each other and to make good use of their own money.
Sofia, the oldest of the group, has been very active in a savings program inside the Center, the "Cuchubal".

The "Cuchubal" is a savings program, popular in Central America. It is a collective organization. Each member contributes every month to a common fund which will be used to lend money for those who need it for a specific purpose. The loans have to be approved by the members. The "Cuchubal" groups are small, 12 persons at the most. They get to know each other, they meet regularly and organize dinners and parties thus contributing to reinforce social cohesion.

To quote Paty Diaz's own words : "The success of the experiment might seem small to an outsider but, for us who live with these young adults, it is great. Each day brings a new awakening, hope, smiles and affection...Even if, like in any family, we encounter problems which we do our best to solve. We express our gratitude to EW".
