John Britto, 47 ans, a intégré l'équipe de GRACE, ONG indienne avec laquelle EW collabore étroitement depuis 2004. GRACE - acronyme qui se traduit par Groupement pour les Droits, l'Education, la Coopération et l'Autodétermination - est basée à Kanyakumari et à Nagercoil dans le District le plus au sud de l'Etat tamoul.
Britto apporte à ce nouveau poste aussi bien des qualifications solides qu'une expérience très riche. Après avoir terminé ses études secondaires, il est parti pour Madurai - la deuxième ville du Tamil Nadu - où il a obtenu une maîtrise de philosophie. Son diplôme en poche, il a été embauché par une ONG indienne dans la région de Calcutta. Là, il a passé 10 ans auprès du Peuple Santali - la plus grande population tribale de tout le pays - pour aider ces personnes totalement démunies à avoir accès à l'éducation aux services de santé, à des programmes de développement économique... Par ailleurs, il avait travaillé pour l'Administration Indienne comme "manager" d'un Centre de Formation.

Britto a intégré l'équipe de GRACE, dans le but de renforcer les potentialités dans le domaine du développement économique pour les personnes les plus pauvres du District. Une coopérative spécialisée dans la fabrication de bougies a déjà été créée, et une autre autour de la fabrication de sacs est sur le point de voir le jour. De tels projets de développement sont essentiels pour les familles dans les bidonvilles aux alentours. Bon nombre de ces familles - souvent monoparentales (femmes seules / veuves) tentent de survivre avec bien moins de 20 euros par mois. C'est une somme nettement inférieure au seuil de la "grande pauvreté" : 1$ par jour, selon les Nations Unies.

Britto, qui s'exprime dans un anglais quasi-parfait (c'est sa quatrième langue !), a fait part de la grande satisfaction qu'il ressent dans ce nouveau travail. Cela lui a permis de poursuivre ses efforts au sein d'une ONG, où il "se sent utile", après son retour en terre natale, avec sa femme et sa fille adolescente. Il y a beaucoup de travail sur la planche - surtout concernant l'élaboration et la mise en route d'un PROGRAMME DE PARRAINAGE à destination des enfants des familles les plus déshéritées du District.
La très grande majorité des élèves du District est hindoue, bien qu'il y ait aussi des familles chrétiennes et musulmanes. Ce que tous partagent, malheureusement, est la pauvreté. Une grand-mère élève seule ses deux petits-enfants, après la mort du papa à la suite d'un cancer et du suicide de la maman... Ou Saaju, un "coolie" (journalier), transporteur de sacs de sable - s'il a la chance de trouver du travail - et sa femme analphabète, Kalarani, et leurs deux enfants... Ils ont encore un toit, mais pas d'eau courante, pas de toilettes, une simple ampoule comme éclairage. Comme beaucoup d'autres, pour ne pas mourir de faim, ils dépendent pour leur survie des rations de riz distribuées par le gouvernement tamoul tous les 15 jours. Une fois les provisions épuisées, une longue série de "jours maigres" s'ensuivent.

Britto a minutieusement sélectionné les candidats potentiels - parmi les plus pauvres - selon leur situation familiale et financière, dans l'espoir de leur trouver des "parrains". La somme nécessaire afin de couvrir les frais scolaires (uniformes obligatoires, fournitures, livres, etc...) s'élève à :
- 40 €/ an pour un enfant, niveau primaire
- 60 €/an pour un collégien
- 80 €/an pour un lycéen...

John Britto, age 47, joined the GRACE-NGO team about six months ago as new "Project Officer". GRACE (Group for Rights, Awareness, Cooperation and Empowerment) is EW's sister NGO, working out of Kanyakumari and Nagercoil in the southernmost district in Tamil Nadu, India.
He is certainly well qualified and highly experienced. After his secondary studies, he went on to complete a Master's in Philosophy at the University of Madurai (Tamil Nadu's second largest city), before taking up a career in social service in the Calcutta area. There he worked with the Santali people - India's largest tribal group - helping to provide basic education, medical treatment, awareness, and economic self-help schemes, within the framework of an Indian NGO. In addition, he has worked for the Indian Administration Service as a manager in a Training Center.

Britto integrated the GRACE-NGO team, with an eye towards reinforcing economic development opportunities for the most downtrodden in the area. A collective candle-making operation has already started up, and there is a move afoot to branch out and create a Co-op specializing in hand-made bags. Such projects are of the utmost importance to the families in the surrounding slum colonies - many of which are headed up by single mothers / widows, trying to survive on much less than 20 euros a month (well under the UN's "extreme poverty rate" of 1$ per day)...

Britto, who expresses himself in nearly flawless English - his fourth language - stated that he is "very happy" in his new job. It has allowed him to continue important NGO work, after his move back to Tamil Nadu with his wife and teenage daughter. There is no end to the tasks ahead, particularly elaborating and getting off the ground a SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM to help the children of the most impoverished families in the District.
The attendance-district is principally Hindu, although there are also Christian and Muslim families. What they often share, unfortunately, is their poverty. A grandma raising her two young grandchildren, after the father died of cancer, leading to the mother's subsequent suicide. Or Saaju, who is a day laborer off-loading bags of sand - when he can find any work at all - and his illiterate wife, Kalarani, and their two children... They still have a roof over their heads, but no indoor plumbing, no drinking water, no toilet, one bare lightbulb overhead. They, like so many others, rely on survival rations of rice provided by the Tamil government to stave off famine. But such meager provisions never see a family through a fortnight, and once they have been consumed, lean, even hungry days follow.

Britto has carefully screened potential candidates, as to their precise family and financial situations, with an eye towards finding educational sponsors for the most destitute. It is estimated that the total annual scholastic needs of the local school population (obligatory school uniforms, school supplies, books, etc...) comes to :
- 40 € / year for children in primary school
- 60 € / year for middle-schoolers
- 80 € / year for those who continue on to what is known as higher secondary
