EW ET LES JEUNES ADULTES HANDICAPES

DE GUATEMALA CITY

          Les liens d’EW avec l’Amerique Latine sont déjà anciens :

-     Programme de soutien aux jeunes porteurs du VIH ou malades du SIDA au Honduras...

-     Mission de trois membres de l’association a Huachipa, dans les bidonvilles de Lima au Perou, ou EW a mis en place un systeme de microcredit pour des femmes totalement demunies...

-    Et enfin, mission a Nebaj dans la zone montagneuse du nord-ouest du Guatemala pour venir en aide aux enfants de la rue, avec l’appui de notre “personne-relais” sur place, Paty Diaz.

      Celle-ci vient tout recemment de nous faire part de nouveaux besoins sur le terrain, a Guatemala City.  Si certains jeunes enfants handicapes - atteints de troubles physiques et/ou mentaux -  sont correctement pris en charge dans des foyers, il n’existe quasiment aucune perspective pour ces memes personnes une fois qu'elles atteignent la majorite.  L’objectif pour EW est de faire acquerir a ces jeunes de la confiance en eux et une autonomie reelle, par le biais d’une insertion professionnelle.

       EW a donc lance, fin 2014, un projet-pilote pour une petite equipe de jeunes adultes (filles et garcons, 18-25 ans). Trois secteurs d'activite semblaient le mieux en harmonie avec le marche local et avec leurs capacites: restauration, nettoyage et entretien de locaux ainsi qu’un service de laverie. Astrid, par exemple, apprend a se servir d'une machine a laver et a repasser. Juan a commence ses taches de nettoyage dans une clinique et peut assurer la proprete des patios. Pendant son temps libre, il aime jouer de la guitare.

   Notre ONG, pour aider a demarrer cette operation, a pris en charge tout le materiel et a apporte le soutien financier necessaire pour une formation initiale et pour le lancement d'une premiere experience professionnelle.  Le budget total est de 5,400 quetzales (soit environ 600 euros par an).

        Nous souhaitons tres bonne chance a tous ces jeunes sur leur chemin vers l’independance.

EW AND HANDICAPPED YOUTH IN GUATEMALA CITY

  

     EW's ties to Latin America go back many years now:

-  The NGO actively supported HIV- and AIDS-stricken youth in Tela, Honduras...  

-  EW sent a three-member team to Huachipa, in the slums of Lima, Peru - to set up a micro-credit program for the most disadvantaged families in the community...  

-  In addition, the organization sent a team to Nebaj, in north-western Guatemala to support a program for Street Kids, with the help of EW's "relay-person" there, Paty Diaz.

     Paty very recently got back to us, expressing new needs emerging in the community, this time in Guatemala City itself.  While some young children there - either physically and/or mentally challenged - are well taken care of, there are virtually no perspectives for the same population once they have come of age.  EW's objective is thus to step in and help set up a pilot project which will help build self-confidence and provide professional skills, leading to an autonomous life for these young adults (both girls and boys, ages 18-25).

     It seemed that three sectors of activity were particularly promising, in as much as they corresponded both to the needs of the local market and to the capacities of the individuals involved.  So professional prospects have been found in the areas of cleaning and maintenance work, food preparation, as well as a local laundry service.  Astrid, for example, is learning how to use the washing machines and to iron.  Juan has begun cleaning in a clinic and tidying up individuals' courtyards - and he enjoys playing the guitar in his free time.

     EW has thus provided all the materials and tools necessary, and the financing to get this program off the ground : 5,400 Guatemalan quetzales which comes to roughly 600 euros per year.

          Bonjour a toutes et a tous !   Veuillez accepter nos sinceres excuses pour cette pause dans la transmission des nouvelles d'EW.  Depuis notre presence a la Journee des Associations et notre dernier article blog fin septembre, nous n'avons pas chome : premieres prises de contact et encadrement du nouveau groupe de stagiaires qui nous viennent du Departement de Gestion de l'Universite de Poitiers, organisation d'une Journee Portes Ouvertes mi-octobre, puis rendez-vous avec des elus et administrateurs de la Ville et du Departement en vue de partenariats, travail administratif avec toutes nos personnes-relais a l'etranger, elaboration de demandes de subventions, et preparation de l'Assemblee Generale du 7 janvier 2015.   De plus, EW etait presente egalement au Marche de Noel de Fontaine-le-Comte et a tenu un stand d'information et de vente d'artisanat au Centre National d'Enseignement a Distance sur le site du Futuroscope... 

     Au cours de la Journee des Associations (14 septembre), de tres nombreuses personnes ont rendu visite a notre stand et plusieurs ont manifeste un reel interet pour EW. Nous avons donc decide d'organiser une "Journee Portes Ouvertes" (le samedi 18 octobre) pour mieux presenter - a ceux qui ne nous connaissaient pas encore - notre fonctionnement, notre financement, nos activites militantes dans la region de Poitiers, et nos 10 programmes de soutien direct a l'etranger.

     L'esprit de EW ?  Ses activites pedagogiques ?  Sa presence au sein de la communaute locale ? Les programmes en Amerique Latine, en Afrique et en Asie?  Plusieurs personnes ont fait part de leur desir de partir en mission dans un avenir plus ou moins lointain - en tant que stagiaire-etudiant, enseignant, ou encore professionnel medical.  Conversation a batons rompus et tres bonne ambiance. 

     C'etait aussi l'occasion de presenter le nouveau groupe d'etudiantes de l'IUT-GEA, avec  lequel nous poursuivons notre partenariat. Le but est de permettre a ces jeunes d'appliquer les techniques de management et de marketing au domaine humanitaire a travers des projets de soutien a EW.

     Les 5 etudiantes du groupe 2015 ont decide de participer a une vente au profit de notre association, a l'occasion de la "Fete des Plantes" de Buxerolles (15 novembre). Les jeunes se sont bien organisees et leur action a connu un franc succes.  Elles preparent egalement une operation "petits dejeuners" a l'IUT meme - dont 100% du benefice net est reverse au profit des programmes EW a l'etranger. Elles esperent aussi creer un "Evenement" (1er trimestre 2015) - pour mieux faire connaitre l'association et recolter des fonds en proposant des articles d'artisanat commerce equitable. Nous les avons suivies regulierement et considerons que la formation des jeunes a l'economie solidaire est egalement une tache tres importante de notre ONG.

EW OPEN HOUSE AND STUDENT INTERNS 2014-15

     Hello to you all and, first off, please accept our heartfelt apologies for this hiatus in the retransmission of EW news...  Since our contribution to the Poitiers Association-Day Festival and our last blog article in late September, we have nonetheless been very busy : first contact meetings and oversight of the new group of student interns from the University of Poitiers' Management Department, organization of an EW Open House, mid-October, meetings with local officials and administrators from the City and from our Departmental Council, ongoing administrative work involving our relay-persons abroad, the fastidious job of preparing complicated grant requests, and getting out all the necessary documentation for the annual General Assembly (7 January 2015). In addition, EW was present at the traditional Christmas Market held in the nearby village of Fontaine-le-Comte, and had an information booth and sold fair-trade products at the French National Center for Distance Learning, just outside of Poitiers...

          EW met many keen visitors at its stand during the Poitiers Association Day Festival (14 September), and there was such interest that EW decided to organize an Open House on 18 October for those people who hadn't yet heard much about us : our operating methods and financing, our multitude of commitments within our own community (outreach, information, training, teaching partnerships, etc), and our direct support for 10 foreign projects.   

     The kinds of questions ?  What is the EW "mind-set" and how do we operate? Basic objectives ?  The NGO's community actions here in France ?  What about our programs in Latin America, francophone Black Africa, and Asia ?  How might it be possible for interested and enthusiastic "new blood" to participate as an EW intern abroad - whether as a student, a teacher, or a member of the medical professions ?  Conversation was easy and the general atmosphere was warm.

          This also afforded an opportunity to introduce the student-interns we  have been mentoring to the rest of the group. The overall objective is to help interested Business Management students learn how to apply their general expertise to the specific field of international solidarity and the non-profit sector and to help further EW's actions in some small, concrete way. 

          The 5 members of the 2015 Management team ("GEA") kicked off their activities with a stand at the Buxerolles Plant Festival (15 November), where they manned an information booth and sold fair-trade handicrafts.  This was a resounding success.  For the rest of the semester, the team organized a breakfast snack-bar for the GEA student-body, with 100% of all net profits going back into EW's foreign programs.  The young women will be organizing a "cultural event" during the 2nd semester, with an eye toward making EW more visible and toward income-generation for the NGO.  EW has faithfully been following groups of management, marketing, and business students at different levels - for years now.  We truly believe that investing in training and education in the non-profit business sector is a way to interest young people in alternatives to the predominant business models.

C'EST LA RENTREE 2014-15 : EW SE REMET AU TRAVAIL APRES LES GRANDES VACANCES !

        

          EW a été active pendant l'été : remise en place après notre fête solidaire fin juin, distribution des nombreux lots de la tombola, tenue des comptes, travail administratif, demandes de subventions, travail avec nos personnes-relais à l'étranger, suivi du stage d'Alex, jeune étudiant de 23 ans qui vient de passer cinq mois avec notre programme à Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu (Sud de l'Inde), etc...

          Mais, depuis septembre, EW a repris ses activités annuelles. Tout d'abord, participation à la Fête de "Coeur-en-Pâte", à Saint-Benoît, tout près de Poitiers, le 7 septembre.  Journée magnifique au soleil avec beaucoup d'amis et de bonne nourriture...  Pique-nique, ventes (très beaux articles en pâte à sel, livres, gâteaux et confitures faits maison) et des compétitions sportives tout l'après-midi.

          Le dimanche suivant, 14 septembre, EW tenait un stand à la "Journée des Associations", organisée tous les deux ans par la ville de Poitiers. C'était la première fois qu'elle avait lieu à l'intérieur, au Parc des Expositions et nous avons tous regretté l'ancien lieu - le parc de Blossac où nous étions sous les arbres... Beaucoup de visiteurs malgré tout (environ 25 000). Les membres d'EW ont distribué des brochures, donné des informations, exposé nos produits commerce équitable, expliqué nos différentes activités. Beaucoup de personnes intéressées par notre association ont fait des dons, certaines se sont renseignées sur les possibilités de volontariat à l'étranger, plusieurs d'entre elles ont adhéré à l'association.

          Les semaines à venir vont être très occupées.  Il nous semble important, tout d'abord, d’organiser une journée « Portes Ouvertes » étant donné le nombre de nouvelles personnes intéressées par EW. Ce sera l’occasion de présenter nos activités et de répondre aux questions concernant nos engagements ici en France et nos programmes de développement intégré à l’étranger.

          Nous avons beaucoup de projets très intéressants pour les semaines et les mois à venir.  Nous travaillerons avec de nouveaux partenaires pédagogiques dans la région et espérons finaliser le jumelage entre un Lycée de Poitiers et sa contrepartie dans le sud du Tamil Nadu.  Puis, début 2015, EW organisera une nouvelle mission à l’étranger afin d’évaluer le travail accompli, de définir le nouvelles priorités et de lancer un important projet d’éco-tourisme…  A bientôt et amitiés d’EW.

EW IS BACK AFTER THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS

       EW was busy over the summer...   Cleaning up after the annual festival in late June and distributing scores of raffle prizes, doing accounts and general administrative work, grant-writing, working with all EW relay-persons abroad and helping our young intern in Nagercoil, Alex.

          But since 7 September 2014, EW has definitely been back at it.  The kick-off was our participation in the annual Coeur-en-Pâte Festival held in a little village, St. Benoît, just outside of Poitiers. A lovely day with lots of friends, lots of good food, lots of sun.  A picnic, sales (salt-dough products, books, homemade foods) and different competitions throughout the afternoon.

           The following Sunday, 14 September, EW manned a stand all day at the biannual Association Day organized by the city of Poitiers.  This is the first time that the event was held inside, out at the municipal Convention Center and we all regretted the former venue - Blossac Park where everyone was out under the trees...  Nonetheless it was a great crowd (some 25,000 visitors in all).  EW Members were busy distributing leaflets, providing information, explaining about our different activities, including our fair-trade products. Of our many visitors to the stand, many stepped up to give donations, a half a dozen made inquiries about becoming EW volunteers abroad, and several signed on to become full-fledged members.

              There will be lots of work in the coming weeks.  Given the number of new folks interested in EW, it will surely be important to organize an "Open House" - an opportunity for us to more fully present our activities and for members of the community to ask all sorts of questions about EW and its approaches to community service here in France as well as integrated development abroad.

          We have any number of exciting projects ahead in the coming weeks and months.  We'll be working on new pedagogical partnerships with different schools around the area here, and hopefully able to bring to fruition the twinning between a local High School here and a large sister institution in southern Tamil Nadu.  Then, in early 2015, EW will be organizing another mission abroad - notably to assess the work accomplished, to define upcoming priorities, and to launch an important eco-tourism project...   More soon, and best wishes from everyone at EW.
