QUI ETES-VOUS ? Le lectorat EW / WHO ARE YOU ? EW's Readership

Anglophones, Please scroll down for the English-Language Version...

Céline - Member from Barcelona, SPAIN

Tad - Member from Ontario, CANADA

Alice - Member from Angers, FRANCE

ENGLISH VERSION :

This is roughly the first anniversary of the EW blog, created at the onset of the EW mission to South India, last spring.  Initially some were somewhat skeptical about the relative "usefulness" of a web-log for an organization of our size.   The endeavor represents a lot of work and there was certainly no guarantee that EW would actually reach a much larger audience ; statistically, the vast majority of all web logs generate no more than a few hundred hits...

Richard - Member from Eugene, USA

EW's India intern, Celine, highly motivated and tech-savvy, weighed in on the debate:  "I'll be able to help - typing, translating, anything !"  So our blogspot address was up and running...  Generating blog text in French, working on the English translations for our international members (and readers across the globe) was certainly work enough, but there were many other challenges.  It meant finding an Indian cyber-cafe and whacking away on a foreign keyboard, with nothing more than a tired overhead fan, when it was up to 100 degrees outside.  More frustrating still, trying to upload pictures would regularly make fragile computer connections crash and video inserts were seemingly always incompatible, making it necessary to log on to conversion systems so as to reformat all the material EW had hoped to post.  If perseverance is a quality, EW mustered lots of it...

Within the very first month of the new EW blog, there had been 618 hits !  And after just a year, our NGO has posted over 30 different articles - on our field work, on our different pedagogical outreach programs, on the life of our association.  This has generated some 5,000 hits - far beyond anyone's early expectations.

Marie - Member from Poitiers, FRANCE

Blogspot is an absolutely free internet service, so this entails nothing but elbow-grease for EW members.  The service also provides statistical information so that our different volunteer blog-masters can better follow our "audience".  First, the question of who was actually reading our articles.  As might be expected, given that we are based in France, a bit more than half our total readership has been from France.  The U.S. and Canada represent the next largest bloc of hits, followed by a wide smattering of different E.U. countries.  And within the developing world, there has been a strong Indian contingent.  But week after week, and month after month, we have all been surprised to see others turn up - readers from South America, Tunisia and Morocco, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore.  International we are!

Then, just how do our blog readers come to us ?  A large percentage log directly onto our blog page, but a fair amount of traffic has been generated by social networks (friends of EW have posted "I like this" messages on their Facebook pages) and others have been via Google searches.  If, for example, someone in the world is interested in the question of "rain-water harvesting", there is a good chance that a link about EW's activities in this area will pop up, inciting that person to read one of our articles.

And what about the actual content of our articles ?  The single story that garnered the most interest concerned the possibility of participating in a fair-trade holiday in India, to learn about the people and the place, while putting money into the hands of the poor themselves rather than rich developers.  EW's "silver-medal" story was called "Dying for a Drink".  This was the result of many years of work to get the water of the Palani (Tamil Nadu, India) watershed tested - going very far to prove the link between environmental pollution and its deleterious results on public health.  Third place has gone to the English translations of all of EW's brochures - about the NGO's different green and fair-trade activities.

Only a small percentage of our readership has decided to become official EW blog members, and unfortunately only a few of our worldwide readers thought to leave direct commentaries about the stories they'd just read.  Perhaps the site will become somewhat more interactive with the stories to be published from Vietnam.  In any case, everyone at EW
is confident that the blog has indeed enabled the NGO to better ensure general "educational outreach" - which is fully half of what we're trying to accomplish (along with program support).  Additionally, EW is grateful for your keen interest and precious support.  Thanks - and keep reading !

Les Lycéens qui travaillent avec EW / EW's High School Partners

Anglophones please scroll down for the English-language version.

The Poitiers School of Management - their students are also EW partners !

Au début du tournoi de "futsal" / The kickoff of the indoor soccer game...

World a été notre premier choix.

Venez nombreux !"

ENGLISH-LANGUAGE VERSION :

For the 2nd year, EW has agreed to take under its wing students from the local business school (Institute of Business Management, known as "IAE") for free training within the framework of a business practicum.  Last year's group was a highly motivated one, and this year's has been no different.  EW has been in constant contact with Alexandre, Kevin, Simon, Dimitri and Pierre so as to help define the scope of the students' field work, to provide supplementary information on microcredit and social business models, and to help oversee the theoretical work on a project concerning the social management of water resources.

The IAE team has been working hard since the beginning of the academic year, including active participation in EW meetings, including those at the top decision-making level.

Early on, the students decided that they wanted to outline and then manage, from A to Z, fundraising events that would be a hands-on addition to their management training. They thus decided to plunge into an indoor soccer tournament (known as "futsal") which was held in November, as well as a student poker tournament to be held mid-February. Whatever the actual amount of net profit raised for EW, the academic practicum was elaborated so as to make the business students at the University of Poitiers more aware of vital North-South issues, which goes over and beyond any mere question of profitability. And after this fundraising phase, EW's young IAE partners will be working hard on their collective "mini-thesis" exploring the question of the social management of water in the Third World. Bravo to the whole team !

THE IAE STUDENTS EXPLAIN THEIR PERSONAL PROFILES AND INTERESTS :

"There are 5 of us, ages 20 to 22, and we're all specializing in Business Management at the IAE Institute of the University of Poitiers.  At the beginning of the academic year, when different IAE partnerships were presented to us, we did not hesitate in choosing EW, as several of us had already been volunteers in humanitarian NGOs and the others were very interested in learning more about an NGO that operated in different countries around the world.

We had several objectives. We of course wanted to make EW better known and to help fundraise for the association - either by different student events or by outreach to the general business community.  But we were also keenly interested in creating more awareness around N-S issues within the student community as well as in deepening our own understanding about alternative economic realities through the exploration of a more theoretical study of an area in which EW is particularly competent, ie. the social management of scarce water resources. This aspect is a very valuable addition to the basic training we get at the IAE Institute.

The Indoor Soccer Tournament - an Assessment of the Operation :

Once we had been chosen by our teachers to be participants in this academic exchange, we decided to set up 2 fundraising projects which we thought would meet our objectives in terms of financing humanitarian operations abroad : a "futsal" tournament in November and a poker tournament which will be held in mid-February.

This entailed numerous contacts and outreach, which included finding an appropriate venue (The "Foot & Balls" complex in Poitiers !) and negotiating a reduced rental price for the use of their infrastructure. Then we had to conceive of an advertising outreach plan, using facebook, posters throughout the university community and around town in Poitiers, flyers, etc.

On the designated day, 8 full soccer teams showed up for an entire afternoon of student sport dedicated to a humanitarian cause.  Our team members divided up the different tasks required to successfully carry out the event : taking in participation fees, setting things up, even participating in different games, to fill in for tired participants !  At the end of the afternoon, participants held a drawing for door prizes.  While the final purse was somewhat below our expectations, this was nonetheless a very rich experience for all of us, and we were proud to have got out scores of students for a worthy cause.  Our next focus ? The upcoming poker tournament, to be held 15 February at the St Paul de Vence café in Poitiers".

Partenaires d'EW

Management Students from the University of Poitiers at EW's side !
(ANGLOPHONES, PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO FIND THE ENGLISH VERSION)

- Elise Maret (option Petites Moyennes Organisations) ;
- Kevin Jeanneau (idem.)
- Chloé Guilloteau (option Ressources Humaines)
- Guillaume Jouhannet (option PMO international).

World 86.

ENGLISH-LANGUAGE VERSION :

For the last several years, the Management Department of the University of Poitiers ("GEA") has been working in tandem with EW. Within the framework of their 3rd-year practicum, and under the guidance of Professors Rouhaud and Martin, a group of highly-motivated students signs on to work with EW every year. This entails ongoing meetings, discussions, training sessions etc on EW's part and active participation in EW's activities for the students. Definitely a win-win situation...

Here is the testimonial of the most recent participants in the EW-GEA exchange :

"There are 4 of us from GEA this year - Elise, Kevin, Chloé and Guillaume. Our practicum has been with EW - and we were all eager to gain greater insight and understanding into the world of humanitarian action, as our own basic training is more focused on economics alone. Thanks to the warm welcome provided by EW, we have been able to work actively with a humanitarian NGO and learned much about other aspects, such as sustainable development, education, and environmental activism.

We hope we have been able to provide valuable help for EW in terms of the marketing and sales of the fair-trade jute bags. So far we have sold 80% of our target and we're confident that we'll have soon sold all our quota. EW has suggested that we also become involved in the disbursement of the funds we will have helped raised, and so our group is thinking about financing a rain-water harvesting system, or helping to provide support - either after-school tutorials for untouchable children, or physical therapy for handicapped kids...

We're very grateful to EW for this wonderful opportunity to broaden our horizons. Members have shared their time and energy; this has been such a positive experience for all of us. Thanks ! "

Rentrée EW/EW : Back to the saddle

Bonjour à tous !

(Anglophones, please scroll down for the text in English).

A bientôt. EW.

English translation

EW official activities started again as early as beginning of September.
A picnic was organized on Sept. 4th by our sister association “Coeur en Pâte” (they make articles and jewellery from salt dough) which has been helping EW for a few years. We attended of course and the whole affair was a real success in spite of heavy rain as shown in the pictures (see the French version). Many thanks to Cathy, the President, for her energy and generosity

EW first meeting of the school year was held on Sept. 13th. We discussed future activities and insisted particularly on the importance of selling the bags (made by “Dahlit” women in Tamil Nadu, South India). They replace, this year, the solidarity calendar and should bring in some cash for our programs.

Contacts with our institutional partners : One high school and , so far, two post-graduate institutions. They should help us with the bag sales. EW will follow their projects and help them in their research on humanitarian themes.

Next meeting : Friday 14 October.

Best to all of you, EW Secretariat.
